Population increase is a driving force of continued (or accelerated) urban development. Concentrated areas of population increase can be seen not only in Downtown LA, but in smaller inland cities as well. Without focused, specific conservation initiatives, urban sprawl poses a direct threat to habitats that support LA's biodiversity. These efforts require the combined interest and effort of policy makers, researchers, and the general public.
