PROJECT

This project is supported by Sustainable LA Grand Challenges.

METHODS

Environmental Data

We developed the environmental data in the Atlas from publicly available GIS and remote sensing data sources. The majority of the layers have been resampled to a 1-kilometer resolution. The spatial extent used for the Atlas maps is the County of Los Angeles and the region within approximately 100 miles of the County center. This buffer area is included to emphasize that LA is not an island; political boundaries have no bearing on environmental conditions or the species that inhabit the region.

Species Distribution Models

Species occurrence records have been contributed from several agencies and public databases. The distribution models were created in Maxent version 3.3.3. The models in the digital Atlas feature 1-kilometer resolution data.
